  • Legends invited for launch of World Cup 2011 logo

A virtual stadium experience has been planned for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011 event identity launch and unveiling of the logo and graphics here on Tuesday.

The highlights of the show will include a presentation of the feats by top performers in each of the previous nine World Cups held in England, India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya and the West Indies.

The innovative launch, through a seamless screen around the edge of the ballroom of a suburban hotel, will project the magic moments of the past World Cups starting with Clive Lloyd’s century in the final of the 1975 Prudential World Cup.

The ICC has planned to highlight at least one leading performer of the events, notably that of Vivian Richards (1979) and Mohinder Amarnath (1983) and others until Adam Gilchrist’s 149 in the final of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

The ICC has invited some of the World Cup legends and a large number of retired and current Indian players for the first launch of the 2011 event, that will be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

It’s not known whether Kapil Dev, captain of the Indian team that stopped Lloyd’s West Indies from winning the Cup for the third time in a row at Lord’s in 1983, has been invited.

Haroon Lorgat, CEO, ICC, and Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, Tournament Director, ICC World Cup 2011, will address the media session after the logo and graphics launch.

The Central Organising Committee (COC) of the World Cup will meet before the launch event and Zakir Khan, Director, Cricket Operations, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has confirmed his travel schedule to Mumbai.

The COC is likely to discuss the draft operation plans, country-wise and consolidated budget and the guarantee money that will be paid to the host countries.
